Sources for buying Mite resistant strains of bees:
Glenn Apiaries in Fallbrook, California,
have developed mite resistant strains of bees.
They recommend
that budget conscious hobbyists
purchase from a list of breeders
who are supplied by the Glenns;
the cost could be as low as $15 per queen.
Interested club members may contact the following
California breeders from that list:

BzBee Pollination, 530-787-3044
Don Coma 530-547-5773
Heitkam's Honey Bees 530-865-9562
Olivarez Honey Bees 530-865-0298
Pendell Apiaries 530-963-3062
Powell Apiaries 530-865-3346
For more info, contact the Glenn's at glennapiaries@gmail.com

Ten Commandments of Beekeeping
Thank you to the Heart of Illinois Beekeeping Association (HIBA) for adapting Keith Delaplane's the ten commandments of beekeeping.  In brief, here they are, as simplified even more by the editor of The Little Stinger:

1. Use only standard equipment.

2. Be considerate of your non-beekeeping neighbors.

3. Requeen regularly.

4. Control diseases and pests regularly.

5. Maximize colony populations before the main nectar flows.

6. Super colonies as they need.

7. Take pride in honey and other hive products.

8.  Protect your beekeeping equipment.

9.  Help your bees through the winter (winter in Orange County?!?).

10. Join and participate in your local beekeeping association.

More Beekeepers in the MEDIA
From April 27th, YahooGroups, de Richard Heryford:__

For those of you who did not show up at the Honey House yesterday, Huell DID show up and taped his whole show. The first scheduled showings will be on:

May 20th 8:00PM on TV channel KOCE and May 27th 7:00PM on TV channel KCET
and of course reruns and syndication to follow.

From July 2007, de Richard Heryford:

I was just watching the CBS evening news and saw Dave Lopez interviewing "MELINDA THE BEE EXPERT" as she calls herself.  Congratulations Melinda on getting on TV!  Did you happen to put in for the club?

From July 2007, per Patricia Mondragon:
Hello all:  Melinda's bee rescue was also written up in the newspaper.  I can't remember if it was the LA Times or OC Register.  Did anyone save it to also share it at the meeting?  It was a great article because it showed how beekeepers/bee experts/bee rescuers do their work.  Good job, Melinda!!
